Just In: Blackpool Boss Provides Update After Anxious Wait
Blackpool boss Neil Critchley has provided an update on defender Matthew Pennington’s injury after the player was forced off in their opening game of the season, in quotes provided by The Blackpool Gazette.
The Seasiders began their season back in League One with victory over a disappointing Burton Albion side. They dominated the ball through much of the game and secured the three points with a brace from Shayne Lavery. It wasn’t however all good news as defender Matthew Pennington was withdrawn on the 55th minute due to injury after informing the bench he needed to come off.
Ahead of the club’s EFL Cup game against Derby County, Critchley was asked regarding the condition of the defender and provided a disappointing update, with the player confirmed to be unlikely to feature. Despite this, the injury doesn’t appear to be as bad as first thought.

“We’ll assess him today,”
“He just felt his groin a little bit at half time but we’re hopeful it’s not too serious.
“He knows his body well. So I’m hoping he brought himself off before it got any worse.
“He wants to play football and he’s got a good history of playing games.
“We’re hopeful that it won’t keep him out for too long.
Pennington signed for the club in June from Shrewsbury Town, signing a two year contract with the option of a further year. The player began his professional career at Everton, and had loan spells at Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Leeds United before linking up with the Shrews on a permanent basis in 2021 following loan periods with the club. He’s also appeared for Hull City, Walsall and Tranmere Rovers.

Pennington will be a huge part of Blackpool’s defense this year. The injury is unlikely to keep him out for long, he has not got a bad history with fitness and appears to be the type willing to put his body on the line for the team. I suspect it will only be a week or two before he’s back in the starting lineup, which is great news for fans of the club.
