Tony Mowbray's Talks On Trai Hume's Red Card Ahead of Championship plans

Trai Hume’s red card will not disrupt Tony Mowbray’s Championship plans

Sunderland defender Trai Hume will serve a one-match ban in the Carabao Cup after being sent off against Ipswich Town at the weekend

Trai Hume will be available for Sunderland’s Championship trip to Preston North End this weekend despite his red card in the 2-1 defeat against Ipswich Town. The Black Cats defender was dismissed in the 73rd minute at the Stadium of Light for a second bookable offence after pulling back Leif Davis, having previously been shown a yellow card for a foul on Massimo Luongo in the first period.

Sunderland were 2-0 down at the time, but went on to pull a goal back through Dan Neil inside the final five minutes, although they could not force an equaliser. The red card carries with it an automatic one-game suspension, and that ban applies to games in the Championship, the FA Cup, and the Carabao Cup.

That means Hume will be suspended for Sunderland’s Carabao Cup first round tie against League Two Crewe Alexandra on Wearside, but will be eligible to play again when the Black Cats return to Championship action as they head to Deepdale for their first away game of the season on Saturday. In fact, Hume’s suspension will not disrupt boss Tony Mowbray’s plans as he will make major changes for the cup game and the Northern Ireland international was not expected to play against Crewe in any case.

Mowbray is likely to play Lynden Gooch, or possibly Niall Huggins, at right-back against Crewe in the cup. Other players set to feature against Crewe include new signing Bradley Dack, along with fellow summer additions goalkeeper Nathan Bishop and defender Nectar Triantis.

Centre-back Danny Batth, midfielders Chris Rigg, Abdoullah Ba, and Alex Pritchard, and forward Jewison Bennette, are also likely to play.
