Latest Birmingham City news from Birmingham Live includes Juninho Bacuna after he starred in the 2-0 win at Cheltenham Town in midweek

Juninho Bacuna admits he needs to find some consistency to keep his place in John Eustace’s Birmingham City line-up.

The uber-talented midfielder bagged a brace on Tuesday as Blues defeated Cheltenham Town 2-0 in the Carabao Cup after failing to make the XI for the opening day draw with Swansea City. After opening the scoring with a deflected drive, Bacuna curled in a sumptuous free-kick for his second goal against the Robins.

Bacuna provided the perfect response to the disappointment of being left out at Swansea. Eustace now has food for thought ahead of this weekend’s clash with Leeds United at St Andrew’s.

“We were patient throughout the game and waited for the gaps to open,” Bacuna said after starring for Blues at The Completely-Suzuki Stadium. “We created a lot of chances, now it’s just the finishing action.”

Speaking afterwards, Eustace challenged match-winner Bacuna to perform more consistently and suggested this is a defining season for the now 26-year-old playmaker. Eustace went on to say that he believes Bacuna has Premier League potential.

Bacuna commented: “I need to be more consistent, week in week out, and show my ability every time I step on the pitch. I’m going to try and do my best this year to be more consistent.

“I just need to keep working hard and my chances will come. I’m just trying to do that and staying positive in training.”

A lot has been made about Bacuna’s position after he was overlooked by Eustace on the opening day. The more defensively dependable Ivan Sunjic was selected to partner Krystian Bielik at the base of Blues’ midfield instead.

Bacuna will play wherever Eustace asks him to, but he is keen to make the spot alongside Bielik his own. The Curacao international added: “I feel comfortable there. I get lots of the ball and can dictate the game. I think that’s where I’m at my best and you can see it in the games.”
