With the signing of a two-year contract extension that will keep him on the field through 2027 and past his 32nd birthday, Matt Grimes has likely put an end to any more rumors about his future this season.
The midfielder, who has more than 250 club matches under his credit, is typically listed first on the teamsheet every week and has been in charge of the team for several seasons since being named captain in July 2019.
After Russell Martin was hired, it had been widely rumored that Southampton would try to sign Grimes. However, because the former manager never made a bid for his former captain, Grimes has now agreed to terms on a new contract with the team.
The signing will give Michael Duff some much-needed momentum as he builds his team and prepares to sign at least two or three more players in the final two weeks of the transfer window, bringing his total number of signings this summer to double digits.
