Leeds United want to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence on loan
Leeds United want to sign Tottenham Hotspurs defender Djed Spence on a season-long loan deal, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast (23 August), the journalist reports that the right-back is likely to leave Spurs this summer after failing to impress Ange Postecoglou.
But they face competition from several clubs including Strasbourg, Swansea City and Bristol City for his signature with a move unlikely until the final week of the window.
“The only interest, to date, in his services is for loans and I think that he would need to drop down to the Championship as well,” he said.
“There might be some late interest from other Ligue 1 clubs and I would keep an eye on Strasbourg. Keep an eye on that but again, that’s only being discussed internally at Strasbourg at the moment, they’ve not moved.
“As far as the Championship enquiries are concerned, my understanding is that they are for loans and there are three clubs that I would keep an eye on over the course of the next week if Tottenham decide to loan and Spence decides to drop down, and those three clubs are Swansea City, Bristol City and Leeds United.”
Excellent
When Djed Spence was last in the Championship he was one of the stand out performers for Nottingham Forest as a right wing-back and earned himself a move to the Premier League.
He opted to head to Spurs under Antonio Conte even though he wasn’t wanted by the manager, rather than stay at Forest permanently following his loan and now he’s barely played for a year after a loan spell at Angers in France.
But now, another exit looks likely and with Spurs being stacked in his position there is a chance for Leeds to make their move.
The club have already signed Joe Rodon on loan from Spurs so the clubs clearly have a good relationship, but it would raise questions about the future of Cody Drameh at the club.
Daniel Farke already tried to sign Max Aarons only to be gazumped at the final moment, so he clearly wants another full-back. Spence could be that man.
