Owen Hargreaves says Callum Wilson ‘looked good’ during his cameo appearance from the bench as Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United suffered a 3-1 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

That’s the third defeat Eddie Howe’s side have suffered this season, despite only losing five last time out.

Newcastle’s performance yesterday wasn’t one to shout about and it certainly wasn’t a reaction from their crushing defeat to Liverpool last time out.

But one shining light was Callum Wilson, with former England midfielder Hargreaves praising the striker for scoring a ‘really good’ goal, as he told Premier League Productions (02/09/23 at 7:45 pm).

Alan Shearer has already shared that Wilson is ‘really angry’ with Howe, as he continues to be left on the sidelines.

Alexander Isak has been the one to lead the line in all four Premier League matches, but when Hargreaves mentioned Wilson’s record, he suggested that it’s probably time for the £46k-a-week star (Spotrac) to get a run of starts.

“He looked good, to be fair, when he came on,” said Hargreaves. “He has a lot of work to do here, by the way, running the channel, the touch and then helping it around.

“Callum Wilson and Isak, they want to run onto these things. It’s a really good goal. He has 14 in 18. When you are scoring that amount of goals, then you would like to think that you are going to get a chance to start a game.”
Wilson and Isak together?
Towards the back end of last season, Howe started playing both of his strikers together and it worked on occasions.

It will be interesting to see if he knocks on that door again because it is worth trying.

Yes, Wilson should be starting matches, but Isak doesn’t deserve to be dropped because he still has so much to offer, especially when he is running with the ball.
