Matt Turner, the goalkeeper for Nottingham Forest, has acknowledged that he must continue to compete for the starting job for the Reds and warns against getting too comfortable.
The USMNT goalkeeper left Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal after a season at the Emirates and signed for Forest in a deal that may increase to £10 million.
However, he is now up against competition for the starting spot at the City Ground following the £7.7 million transfer deadline day signing of Odysseas Vlachodimos from Benfica.
The 29-year-old Greek international has an impressive resume after last season’s Champions League success with the Portuguese team.
The American told Goal that he has adapted well to life at Forest but that he needs to improve on his strong start.
“I believe that I have adjusted to the change fairly well.
I’m thrilled to have gotten the chance to attend, participate in games, and compete. It’s simple to fall into the mindset of not competing and content with just receiving your money and reporting to work, but I believe the competition aspect of the game is what first drew me in.
Speaking of competition, the Premier League is the best league in the world, and there will be competition for positions. If we want to be the club we want to be moving forward, we’ll need competition on and off the field every day in practice to fend off complacency and other issues.
“I’m excited about the challenges ahead. I’m looking forward to competing, and in the end, I want to participate in as many games as I can to maintain the competitive spirit on the field.
