Roman Bürki has acknowledged that he was taken aback when informed that he was no longer expected to play for Borussia Dortmund’s first team.
Roman Bürki joined St. Louis City SC in 2022, a new MLS team, after spending seven years with Borussia Dortmund. The Swiss goalkeeper played 232 times for the club during an up-and-down tenure with the Black and Yellows.
Bürki was the third-choice keeper for Borussia Dortmund when his tenure there came to an end, though. He lost his roster berth in 2021, and fellow countryman Gregor Kobel took his place.
Bürki has since reflected about his surprise at being fired from BVB and how it affected him. The 32-year-old said in an interview with SportBILD
“I was dissatisfied since the decision-makers had handed me a new contract a year earlier and said they relied on me. When Edin Terzic and Sebastian Kehl informed me that they would no longer be planning with me, I was shocked.
“I wasn’t able to enjoy the victory as much as I would have liked after beating RB Leipzig in the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin. I received messages from BVB officials before the game complimenting my play. I had recently been informed that I was no longer needed, so that didn’t feel right.
Roman Bürki, the club captain of St. Louis City SC, has seen a remarkable turnaround. The goalkeeper is content in America and feels that his new team and fans value him greatly.
In addition, according to Bürki, Lionel Messi’s presence has made the MLS more popular around the world.
Messi draws enormous global attention to the MLS. Seeing who is now seated in the stadiums is also fantastic, especially for young American players. Messi has drawn celebrities from many spheres of life. USA football popularity is increasing. Kids want to play football more and more. Additionally, the fans are outstanding.
This season, Bürki has made a total of 28 appearances for St. Louis City SC, who are currently ranked second in the MLS standings.
