The 2023–24 League One season is officially passed its first month, and it’s already looking like a very tight race. Portsmouth has had a solid start to the season, recording no losses and surrendering just two goals in their first six games.
With the addition of 14 new players, including two loan signings from Premier League junior teams, Pompey had a successful transfer window. However, this League One season still has a very long way to go, and much like the transfer market, anything can happen along the road. As attention turns to the international break, here are some of the most recent headlines for Portsmouth and their league opponents.
Even though the season has only been a month old, we have already seen how fiercely competitive the league is this year. Despite Pompey’s unblemished record thus far, John Mousinho did not even reach the shortlist for the August Manager of the Month award.
Liam Manning of Oxford United won the award, defeating Andy Crosby of Port Vale, Shaun Maloney of Wigan, and Exeter City’s Gary Caldwell at the top of the standings. With 13 points, the Grecians are in first place, tied with Bolton but superior on goal differential. Portsmouth, meanwhile, has 12 points after three victories and three draws, but despite their impressive start, Mousinho was not nominated for Manager of the Month.
