Edson Álvarez has admitted that Borussia Dortmund had concrete interest in signing him before talks collapsed and he ended up joining West Ham United.
Borussia Dortmund had a chaotic summer transfer window that saw them make four signings. But the Black and Yellows’ transfer window could have looked very different had they not pulled out of the race to sign Edson Álvarez.
It is no secret that BVB wanted to sign the Mexico international from Ajax. But in the end, they decided to withdraw their interest and go with Emre Can as the first-choice defensive midfielder. Álvarez has now revealed just how close he was to joining Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
In an interview with the Mexico national team, the 25 year old said that BVB officials even visited Amsterdam to meet with his family.
“Borussia Dortmund was a very concrete option. In the end, it didn’t work out, but there was a lot of interest on their part, including visits to Amsterdam to meet with my family.”
Borussia Dortmund’s decision to pull out of the race to sign Edson Álvarez was a decision made by Edin Terzic, who was predominantly in favour of giving Emre Can the role. The Germany international was also named BVB captain and his contract with the club was extended.
Álvarez ended up joining West Ham United, where he has made an impressive start to the season. The defensive midfielder said that he believes things happen for a reason, and added that he is very happy at his new club.
