Newcastle United defender Sven Botman appears to have confirmed his participation in tonight’s game against Brentford at St James’ Park (5:30pm kick-off).
Botman missed the Magpies’ previous 3-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion due to an ankle injury sustained against Liverpool six days previously. However, having resumed training during the international break, the Dutchman is expected to return to the starting XI for the Bees’ visit.
On Instagram, the 23-year-old teased his comeback by posting a matchday image. In comparison, he did not do so versus Brighton.
When asked if Botman would play against the Bees at his pre-match press conference, Magpies head coach Eddie Howe said, “Perhaps, he’s trained this week.” We’ll see how Sven feels [during training on Friday].”
Sandro Tonali, a £52 million summer addition, is a doubt for this evening’s match. Due to a thigh injury, the midfielder missed Italy’s 2-1 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Ukraine.
“He felt his thigh during training,” Howe said. “So he’s returned and had a scan; there’s a minor injury there, so we don’t think it’s serious or too long, but we’ll see if he’s available this weekend.”
Newcastle is looking to get back on track after losing their past three Premier League games against Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton.
