Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has been taken unwell and will not be in command of the Eagles’ game against Aston Villa today, according to the club.
Hodgson, 76, will not be at Villa Park today, according to a statement from Palace.
“Unfortunately, Roy Hodgson was taken ill earlier today and will not be present at Villa Park.” Roy has spoken with Paddy McCarthy, who will lead the squad today with the assistance of Ray Lewington.
“Roy sent the team his best wishes ahead of the game.” We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Roy.”
Hodgson resigned from football at the end of the 2022/23 season, but he returned to Selhurst Park as a replacement for Patrick Vieira, who was fired after a bad run of form.
The former England manager arrived on a temporary basis, but after leading Palace to safety by winning five of his ten games in charge, he agreed a one-year contract extension with the club this summer.
Palace have started the season positively, sitting in seventh place heading into Saturday’s trip to Villa Park, with two wins, one draw, and one loss from their first four games.
It is presently unknown what ailment has stopped Hodgson from managing his 397th Premier League game this afternoon.
McCarthy, a former Palace captain, will take over as manager at Villa Park, moving up from the assistant manager position. Lewington, a trusted ally of Hodgson after serving in a variety of assistant jobs under him, will also increase his engagement.
