West Ham boss David Moyes is seriously considering benching Nayef Aguerd.
That’s according to The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas, who claims that West Ham centre-back Nayef Aguerd’s worrying downturn in form has not gone unnoticed.
Hammers manager David Moyes signed the 27-year-old centre-back from Rennes for about £30 million in the summer of 2022 (Sky Sports).
Despite some great performances, Aguerd appears to have declined significantly over the last six months or so.
I’ve already proposed that Moyes bench the Moroccan for the Liverpool game this weekend, in favor of Konstantinos Mavropanos.
And it appears like the 25-year-old is now seriously challenging Aguerd for a starting spot…
According to Roshane Thomas, West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd is in for some terrible news.
The Moroccan international, according to the Athletic journalist, risks being sacked by Moyes unless he changes his ways immediately.
On Saturday afternoon, Aguerd was to blame for Manchester City’s second goal at the London Stadium.
The main concern here is that this was not a one-time occurrence; rather, it appears to be happening far too frequently.
The former Rennes star has poor positional awareness and makes reckless challenges and decisions.
There is undoubtedly a very excellent player somewhere in there, but he has to be removed from the firing line right now so that he can refocus and work hard on his flaws.
As far as I’m concerned, Nayef Aguerd has been West Ham’s weak link this season.
I still believe he has a bright future with West Ham, but the best option David Moyes could make right now would be to let him go.
Will he, however, be rested for the Liverpool game? Much will be determined by Mavropanos’ performance against Backa Topola tomorrow night.
