Newcastle United duo Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes are already walking a disciplinary tightrope after just five rounds of Premier League fixtures. Any player earning five bookings from his side’s first 19 Premier League matches will have to serve a one-match ban in the same competition.
Both players have been mainstays in Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side so far this season, starting all five of the Magpies’ Premier League games. Gordon has four yellow cards to his name and is just one away from a one-game ban, while Guimaraes has three yellow cards.
Howe’s side are back in domestic action against Sheffield United this weekend, before a clash against Man City in the Carabao Cup. Fortunately for both Gordon and Guimaraes, yellow cards are not carried over to the EFL Cup or FA Cup if they were to receive a booking this weekend.
The disciplinary tightrope could force Howe to rotate his side heading into the clash with the Blades, although the Magpies are also on the brink of a favourable run of games after a tough start.
Gordon was shown a yellow card against Brentford, Brighton, Man City and Aston Villa, while Guimaraes was also booked against the Villains. The Brazilian was also booked against Man City and Brentford but has another game spare.
Players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches up to and including their team’s 32nd fixture will serve a two-match ban in the competition.
