Sunderland to suffer huge injury setback as key player is scheduled to undergo critical surgery

Elliot Embleton has returned to the Academy of Light after suffering a thigh injury whilst on loan at Derby County.

The 24-year-old recently completed a season-long loan move to Pride Park Stadium, as he continued his comeback from an ankle injury sustained in December 2022.

After making two appearances for the Rams, Embleton is now unfortunately facing an additional spell on the sidelines, with the midfielder set to undergo surgery before completing his rehabilitation on Wearside.

“It’s a big blow for the boy”, said Head Coach Tony Mowbray at his pre-Sheffield Wednesday press conference.

“I’ve had a long chat with him and he is obviously pretty down because had eight months out – the reason he went out on loan was to try and give him some game time at a level that he would hopefully be able to play regularly at.”

“It appears that he has popped his thigh muscle, and I believe it will be a few months,” he continued.

“We have discussed with him coming back and having his rehab here so that he can be around everybody, and so he feels part of what we’re trying to do.”

Everyone at SAFC wishes Elliot a speedy recovery.
