Alexander Isak has passed a late fitness test and will be available for Newcastle United’s return to Premier League action at St James’ Park against Burnley (3pm kick-off).
Isak was forced off with a calf injury after scoring the game-winning goal against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. The striker said he was alright after the game, but Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe stated the Swede, along with several others, including Callum Wilson, would be subjected to a late fitness test.
“Callum, we’ll see [Friday],” Howe stated ahead of the Premier League match against Burnley. He has very minimal hamstring discomfort, so he should be OK for the game.
“Alexander Isak is another one who we’ll have to check on later,” Howe continued. That was the expense of three games last week. These games normally build up in the third game, and that’s where we are.”
Isak was photographed arriving at St James’ Park before of the Burnley match. The Clarets are still hunting for their first Premier League victory of the season, while Newcastle are looking to continue their great run of form, which has seen them keep four consecutive clean sheets since the international break.
Dan Burn and Martin Dubravka also returned to the squad after being unable to play against Manchester City due to illness. Bruno Guimaraes has also arrived after injuring his ankle in the process.
