In an exclusive interview with Football Insider, former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie has expressed his surprising support for Newcastle United’s chances of winning the Champions League this season. McAvennie acknowledged that while luck would play a role, he wouldn’t be shocked if Eddie Howe’s team managed to clinch the prestigious trophy.
Newcastle’s return to the Champions League has been remarkable, starting with a draw against AC Milan and a convincing 4-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on October 4th. This achievement comes less than two years after their takeover by the Saudi Public Investment Fund and a fourth-place finish in the previous season secured their qualification for the top European competition.
When asked about the Magpies’ potential in the Champions League, McAvennie stated that while some are predicting a victory, Newcastle isn’t necessarily aiming for that goal. He believes they can progress through the group stage and reach the knockout rounds, where luck often plays a significant role. While he’s not certain they will win it, he wouldn’t be surprised if they did, given the positive atmosphere at the club, the camaraderie between the manager and players, and the overall good fortunes currently favoring them.
