Yankuba Minteh’s loan spell at Feyenoord has begun on a positive note, and Eddie Howe is eagerly anticipating his arrival at Newcastle United next season.
Minteh, who signed for Newcastle in June from Odense for a reported £7 million, was swiftly loaned to Feyenoord. The 19-year-old winger has been impressive in the Eredivisie, netting three goals and providing an assist in his last five outings. He also made his debut for the Gambia national team, scoring a crucial goal in a 2-2 draw against Congo.
Despite having been under contract with Newcastle for four months, Minteh has yet to visit the city, as his loan to Feyenoord was arranged just before the start of the pre-season.
Minteh explained, “I was able to sign a contract with Newcastle, but I have never seen the city myself. The club immediately indicated that I would go to Feyenoord on loan. In Rotterdam, I also signed my contract with Newcastle. The club brought over various people to the Netherlands to ensure that my first weeks went well.”
While his loan is set to last until the end of the season, there are already hopes that he might stay longer. Minteh has expressed his satisfaction with his current situation, feeling appreciated by the coaches and fans, and seeing personal development under his current coach.
However, Minteh faced criticism from Feyenoord manager Arne Slot after a recent match against Zwolle, where he chose to take chances himself instead of passing to a teammate. Slot questioned whether it was a lack of overview on Minteh’s part or a desire to score himself. He acknowledged Minteh’s speed and threat but felt that the young player didn’t maximize his opportunities in that particular game.
Once his loan at Feyenoord concludes, Minteh is expected to join the Newcastle squad next summer. There’s a possibility he might be loaned out again, but Eddie Howe is delighted with the progress Minteh has made in the Netherlands, citing his goal-scoring ability and development in a competitive league.
