Former Newcastle United winger joins Premier League club – 40 days after deadline

The former Newcastle United winger, Andros Townsend, who has been without a club since leaving Everton when his contract ended this summer, has found a new opportunity in the Premier League. Townsend has joined the newly-promoted Premier League side Luton Town after training and playing for Burnley in pre-season. He was initially offered a contract by Burnley but then had a change of heart and decided to sign a short-term deal with Luton Town until January, despite the summer transfer window closing in England 40 days ago.

Andros Townsend, who will wear the squad number 30, expressed his satisfaction with the move, saying, “I feel like it’s a good fit, and these last couple of weeks have been positive for both parties. I believe it had to be the right decision, and over the past two weeks, we’ve had a chance to evaluate each other.”

Townsend also mentioned his enthusiasm and experience, highlighting how he can contribute both on and off the pitch, in the dressing room, and on the training field. Moreover, the fact that Luton Town is his local team, located just 20-25 minutes from his residence, played a significant role in his decision. He had been keeping an eye on the club’s progress, even watching them win promotion through the Championship play-off final.

Joining Luton Town is a significant honor for Townsend, as it provides him with an opportunity to play in the Premier League once again. He hopes to help the club earn as many points as possible and see where their journey takes them.

Andros Townsend began his career at Tottenham Hotspur, where he made 93 appearances before moving to Newcastle in January 2016 for a £12 million transfer fee. Although he had a short-lived stint at Newcastle, where he scored four goals in 13 games, he joined Crystal Palace following United’s relegation from the Premier League. Townsend came close to returning to Newcastle later on, but the deal was blocked by Magpies owner Mike Ashley. He spent five years at Selhurst Park and was just 15 appearances away from reaching 200 before reuniting with former manager Rafa Benitez in 2021. However, his time at Goodison Park was cut short due to a knee injury.
