Jayson Molumby is enduring a challenging October, facing both a lack of game time at West Brom and another omission from the Republic of Ireland’s squad following a 2-0 loss to Greece. This recurring exclusion from international duty might compel him to seek discussions about his future under Carlos Corberan at West Brom.
In their latest match at the Aviva Stadium on October 13th, Stephen Kenny’s team suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Greece, essentially extinguishing their hopes for Euro 2024 qualification. Surprisingly, Molumby was once again left out of the national team, despite his controversial call-up, which occurred despite his minimal playing time under Carlos Corberan at West Brom.
Molumby, who started in the defeat against France in September and struggled in a comfortable French victory on September 7th, found himself on the bench against the Netherlands on September 10th. Over the last three Championship matches, he has been a mere benchwarmer for West Brom. It is conceivable that his limited minutes on the field have played a role in his exclusion from the national squad.
Notably, BBC pundit and former footballer Kevin Kilbane, writing for the Irish Times on October 7th, questioned the rationale behind Molumby’s national team call-up, citing concerns about his ability to address Ireland’s creative limitations.
In the Championship season under Corberan, Molumby initially started eight matches, but recently, he has fallen down the pecking order as Alex Mowatt has become a vital contributor to West Brom. In contrast, Molumby has remained on the bench and hasn’t played a single minute in the team’s last two matches. This situation is in stark contrast to his link to a potential move to Leeds United during the summer transfer window, which did not come to fruition due to Corberan’s limited squad options.
Given his challenging circumstances at both the club and international levels, Molumby might believe that he needs regular playing time to regain consideration for the national team. This situation may necessitate critical discussions with Corberan in the coming weeks, especially if his lack of opportunities persists. If his situation doesn’t improve, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him request a departure from West Brom in the January transfer window. West Brom, currently facing financial difficulties, may need to part ways with players to generate much-needed funds, making Molumby’s potential exit a plausible outcome.
