Despite Ross Stewart’s lengthy absence from the pitch, Southampton remained undeterred in their pursuit of his services on Transfer Deadline Day. The striker, who had previously played for Sunderland in the Championship, made a significant move to St Mary’s for an approximate £10 million fee.

In the previous Championship season, Sunderland impressively reached the play-off semi-finals. Typically, a player with just 13 league appearances might not have a substantial impact on the team’s eventual 6th place finish, but Stewart was an exception. He managed to score 10 goals before suffering an Achilles tendon injury against Fulham in January.

Since that fateful day, the 27-year-old has not played a single game, even for his new club, Southampton. When asked about Stewart’s return from injury, Russell Martin, the manager, emphasized the need for patience, stating that they would take the time necessary to ensure his full recovery instead of rushing him back too quickly.

Martin expressed his excitement about Stewart’s potential and the positive qualities he would bring to Southampton’s attacking department but stressed the importance of being cautious.

Mark Wyatt, a Southampton reporter for HampshireLive, suggested that Stewart might make a cameo appearance off the bench in the upcoming game against Hull City, as he has been back in training over the past few weeks.

Football pundit Carlton Palmer also provided his perspective, highlighting the positive impact Stewart’s return could have on Southampton’s promotion chances. He praised Stewart’s ability to lead the line and find the back of the net. Palmer noted that while Southampton’s ability to score goals is not an issue, they need to address their defensive vulnerabilities, having conceded 21 goals in 11 games.

Despite the competition in the attacking department from Che Adams and Adam Armstrong, who have already scored ten goals between them, Stewart’s return is eagerly awaited. Southampton’s next match is against Hull City at the MKM Stadium, and there’s a possibility that Stewart might be included in the matchday squad for the first time.
