Sandro Tonali’s representative has acknowledged that the Newcastle United midfielder is grappling with a gambling addiction following his involvement in a betting scandal in Italy. Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli is facing a seven-month suspension for his involvement in illegal betting, and Tonali, along with Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo, has also been implicated. Tonali is accused of placing bets on football matches, which is prohibited for individuals associated with the sport.
In response, Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, has confirmed that the 23-year-old is confronting his gambling addiction. Riso, who played a role in Tonali’s transfer from AC Milan to Newcastle this summer, stated, “He is a bit shaken by the situation but has already initiated his fight. He’s always been a fighter. This is the most crucial match against an addiction. He has a history of winning significant battles.”
Riso further added, “I hope Sandro’s experience can serve as a lifeline for other young individuals. Kudos to Newcastle, who have consistently supported the player during this difficult and distressing time.” Tonali has sought help from a therapist to address his gambling addiction and has committed to cooperating with the investigations conducted by the Italian football association (FIGC).
Despite the looming threat of a ban, Tonali has returned to Newcastle after leaving the national team’s camp during the current break. It is expected that he will be permitted to participate in Newcastle’s upcoming match against Crystal Palace at home this weekend. Riso confirmed this by stating, “Sandro is training and could even play on Saturday. He has realized that he must confront this problem with determination, and the club is currently providing its support.”
