Saints winger Sam Edozie has shared how Russell Martin’s demanding coaching style has been instrumental in enhancing his performance. The 20-year-old recently scored his first senior goal in a match against QPR and followed it up with another goal against Leicester in Southampton’s subsequent home game. Despite these improvements in his attacking output, Edozie has not been a part of the starting lineup for the past four games, as Russell Martin has preferred the fit-again Kamaldeen Sulemana.
Nonetheless, Edozie remains confident in his abilities and is prepared to seize his opportunity when it arises. In an interview with the club’s media team, he highlighted his positive working relationship with Martin, acknowledging the coach’s tough approach as essential for his growth.
Edozie expressed, “We have a strong rapport. He’s strict with me, but I believe it’s necessary. He genuinely wants the best for me, and that’s why he demands a lot from me. He provides ample encouragement and demonstrates his trust in me by giving me ample playing time this season. I have no complaints, and I’m committed to working hard for him.”
Furthermore, Edozie noted that Martin consistently emphasizes the importance of minimizing mistakes in his game, recognizing that fewer errors contribute to becoming a better player. He values a manager who pays attention to the finer details and pushes him to excel.
Edozie’s style of play relies on his speed and agility to outmaneuver defenders. He has been remarkably successful in this aspect, averaging 10.51 dribbles per 90 minutes, which is the second-highest in the Championship, trailing only Jack Clarke of Sunderland.
His two goals this season and his ability to create scoring opportunities demonstrate the positive influence of working under Russell Martin. Edozie expressed the significance of his first goal, which relieved a significant amount of pressure and was particularly special with his family present in the crowd.
Initially, his focus in men’s football was primarily on taking on opponents with his dribbling skills. However, with more game time and experience, he has come to understand the importance of the “end product.” He now values a game in which he can take several shots and execute well, even if he has fewer dribbling attempts, as it represents a more effective contribution to the team.
Edozie explained, “Sometimes I’d receive the ball and opt to take on a defender instead of shooting, and the opportunity would slip away. In those moments, the manager advises me on what to do next time: receiving the ball, shifting it, and taking the shot. I believe that’s crucial. The more I find myself in these situations, the more I’ll recall his guidance and put it into practice.”
He appreciates Martin’s encouragement to play with creativity but also acknowledges the need for patience, especially when the ball isn’t frequently directed toward the wings. Martin encourages him to stay wide, confident that the ball will eventually come his way. When it does, Edozie aims to make a decisive impact on the game.
