Newcastle United is considering potential signings in the January transfer window, with the aim of strengthening their squad. While the club made significant signings during the summer, the suspension of Sandro Tonali due to a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations has prompted the need for reinforcements in the midfield area.
Several midfield targets have been identified, including Ruben Neves, who is currently playing for Al Hilal, Scott McTominay of Manchester United, and Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.
However, according to French journalist Ignazio Genuardi, Newcastle is exploring a different approach. Instead of securing a direct replacement for Tonali, the club is planning to sign two midfielders who can fulfill distinct roles.
One of the potential signings is Rayan Cherki, an attacking midfielder from Lyon. The 20-year-old has been shortlisted by Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. Cherki’s contract is set to expire in June 2025, and he may be available for a move in January. Cherki has not been a guaranteed starter at Lyon, which could open up opportunities for him to impress at Newcastle, particularly during Tonali’s absence.
In addition to Cherki, Newcastle is also interested in signing Khephren Thuram, a defensive midfielder from Nice, who can play a role slightly behind Cherki.
Moreover, Newcastle is looking for a new center-back to partner Sven Botman in the long term, as Fabian Schar is now 31 years old. The ideal signing for this position is Joachim Andersen from Crystal Palace, who has received praise for his partnership with Marc Guehi.
Newcastle has the financial backing of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which enables them to make significant signings in a single transfer window. However, the club is cautious about avoiding breaches of Financial Fair Play regulations. Therefore, they may prioritize the signing of one or both midfield targets in the January window and potentially pursue Andersen in the summer.
