Newcastle United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has expressed his hope that Eddie Howe will remain committed to the club and not be tempted by the England national team’s job if it becomes available next summer.
Eddie Howe has been considered a potential replacement for Gareth Southgate as the national team’s manager after the European Championships in Germany next summer. While the tournament may be viewed as Southgate’s potential last international assignment, Ashworth acknowledges that football is unpredictable.
Ashworth mentioned to Chronicle Live, “There’s speculation about what may or may not happen and which jobs might be available. I’m confident that if Gareth wins the Euros in the summer, the position won’t be vacant. All I can say is that Eddie has established an excellent rapport with the club’s staff, board members, and supporters. He is doing an outstanding job, is in a great place, and we hope it continues.”
Ashworth’s comments came following a discussion with journalists to address questions about Sandro Tonali. When asked if this signaled a new approach, especially considering that Eddie Howe had to handle various political questions in the aftermath of the previous regime, whereas Steve Bruce was the one tasked with such matters, the sporting director of Newcastle United said, “Yes, as a club, we want to support everyone, particularly Eddie. Eddie’s primary responsibility is preparing the team for each game, and in this day and age, there are various issues that head coaches and managers have to address that may not be directly related to the game. I believe it’s important to give him some breathing space. It’s also beneficial for other representatives from the club to engage with you all. Transparency and openness are crucial aspects of our job.”
