Newcastle United is facing a significant setback as Jacob Murphy will be sidelined for an estimated three months due to an injured shoulder requiring surgery. Additionally, the club has concerns about Dan Burn’s availability for an extended period after he suffered a back problem during their 1-0 victory over Arsenal.
Murphy initially dislocated his shoulder during a match against Crystal Palace last month. Despite the injury, he opted to continue playing without immediate surgery. In a recent appearance as a second-half substitute against Arsenal, he lasted only 15 minutes on the field before experiencing another dislocation while stretching his arm. Now, Murphy is scheduled for surgery, and manager Eddie Howe is worried that he could be out of action for approximately three months.
Howe explained, “With Jacob, we always knew there was a chance that he could do his shoulder again, but he was prepared to take the risk. Unfortunately, we lost him during the game, and we will lose him now to an operation.”
Murphy’s absence compounds Newcastle’s growing injury issues in midfield and attack. Players like Harvey Barnes, Elliot Anderson, and Alexander Isak are already sidelined, and Bruno Guimaraes will miss the next Premier League game due to suspension.
Defensively, Sven Botman remains injured, and there are concerns regarding Dan Burn’s back injury. Burn seemed to have landed awkwardly after contesting a header and was visibly in discomfort before being substituted at halftime. Howe expressed concern about the severity of Burn’s injury and suggested it might not be the type that resolves quickly.
