The importance of team chemistry can rival talent in achieving championship success. This is evident in the strong camaraderie among the Baltimore Ravens’ defense, both on and off the field.

On November 2, New York Jets linebacker Quincy Williams was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month, sparking celebration among Jets fans. However, not everyone agreed with this choice.

Ravens star cornerback Marlon Humphrey expressed his dissatisfaction with the selection. Humphrey took to his Instagram story, sharing an image of Williams’ award announcement and added the words, “I’m not hating but someone had 4 interceptions in October…,” referring to Ravens safety Geno Stone. Stone has been performing exceptionally well this year, filling in for the injured Marcus Williams, and has received praise from both teammates and coaches for his contributions to the defense.

The Ravens and Jets are both known for their strong defenses, and Humphrey’s comment might simply reflect the pride and support that the entire Ravens defense has for one another. Both Stone and Williams have compelling cases for the award, making it an interesting topic if the two teams meet in the playoffs.

As impressive as Quincy Williams’ performance was, there is a valid argument that Stone deserved the AFC Defensive Player of the Month award. Humphrey is correct in suggesting that Stone should have been considered for the honor, and he certainly made a strong case. Stone concluded October with another remarkable performance, securing his fifth interception of the season during the Ravens’ Week 8 game against the Arizona Cardinals. This achievement placed him in esteemed company among Ravens players, tying with Ed Reed for the most interceptions by a Raven through the first eight games of a season.

Stone’s remarkable rise from a seventh-round draft pick to a player compared to one of the best safeties in Ravens history is truly commendable. He had to step into a starting role due to injuries in the Ravens’ safety corps, and in five October games, he accumulated 10 combined tackles, four interceptions, and four pass deflections. His Pro Football Focus rating of 85.9 for the season places him above safeties like Kyle Hamilton and Marcus Williams.

Stone’s contributions have been crucial for the Ravens, helping them lead the AFC North with a 6-2 record. His breakout season comes at an opportune time as he is in a contract year, positioning himself for a substantial payday, which he rightfully deserves.

Meanwhile, the New York Jets have also witnessed the breakout of linebacker Quincy Williams. Often overshadowed by his brother Quinnen Williams, Quincy has been a hidden gem for the Jets’ defense. Claimed off waivers in September 2021, he was subsequently rewarded with a 3-year, $18 million contract, which Jets fans believe has been a worthwhile investment.

This season, Quincy Williams has performed at an exceptional level, amassing 71 combined tackles, two sacks, and six pass deflections in just seven games. Pro Football Focus rates him at 88.6 for the season, placing him among the top five linebackers in the league.

Williams has developed a talent for pivotal defensive plays. In a game against the Denver Broncos, he secured a crucial sack and forced a fumble to seal the victory for the Jets. In October, he had an impressive stat line, with 45 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 1 forced fumble, contributing significantly to the Jets’ resurgence in the playoff race.
