West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan, may receive a boost in his efforts to secure a play-off spot after a recent update on a potential takeover of the club. Since taking charge in the middle of the 2022/23 season, Corberan has faced limitations in terms of player recruitment.
During the summer transfer window, the club’s transfer activities were primarily restricted to loan and free-agent signings, with only Josh Maja arriving at The Hawthorns on a permanent basis. This limited activity was mainly due to a lack of investment from the current owners of West Brom.
However, reports emerged in September that potential investors from America and the Middle East had entered talks with Guochuan Lai, the majority shareholder, to potentially end his ownership at the club. NDAs (Non-Disclosure Agreements) are already in place, and it is expected that the sale process will be completed before the end of the season.
A recent development indicating progress in the potential takeover is the presence of sports lawyer David Hinchcliffe alongside Lai during a West Brom victory over Hull City. Hinchcliffe, known for his involvement in numerous football-related deals, suggests that negotiations between parties are underway.
While no takeover deal has been finalized yet, the initial signs indicate that a change of ownership is heading in the right direction, which could allow Corberan to strengthen his squad in January. Despite working with a limited budget and a small first-team squad, Corberan has led West Brom to a strong start to the season, currently sitting fifth in the Championship, competing for a play-off position.
With the possibility of a new owner injecting funds ahead of the January transfer window, Corberan’s team could become even more competitive. The hope is that with the addition of one or two quality players in the new year, the club can realize its full potential.
Both supporters and Corberan will be eager for a successful deal to be concluded in the coming weeks and months, potentially taking the team to new heights.
