Carson Wentz is on the verge of getting another chance to revive his NFL career, as reports suggest that the Los Angeles Rams are preparing to sign him, contingent on a successful physical examination. This information comes from NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, citing an inside source, with the initial report credited to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston.
The Rams were in need of a quarterback after their starting QB, Matthew Stafford, was unable to play in Week 9 due to a thumb injury. Backup Brett Rypien’s underwhelming performance in that game, which included just 130 passing yards, an interception, and a fumble, led to reports that the Rams were releasing Rypien, effectively ending his time with the team.
While the Rams had a bye week in Week 10, head coach Sean McVay expressed optimism that Stafford would return after the break. However, the addition of Carson Wentz provides depth to the quarterback position.
Carson Wentz, the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft (chosen right after the Rams selected Jared Goff at No. 1), has faced a series of challenges in his career since a standout 2017 season that was cut short by an ACL injury. He spent five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before being traded to the Indianapolis Colts two years after signing a significant long-term contract in 2019.
In the 2021 season, Wentz struggled in 17 starts with the Colts, grappling with turnovers, inefficient passing, and puzzling mistakes. The season ended on a disappointing note as the Colts missed the playoffs with a Week 18 loss to Jacksonville, a game in which Wentz struggled until it was out of reach.
Afterwards, Wentz was traded to the Washington Commanders in an attempt to address their quarterback issues. However, the trade did not go as planned, as Wentz’s inconsistent performance contributed to the team losing four of their first five games. Wentz suffered a hand injury in Week 6 and was placed on injured reserve.
Even after recovering, he did not immediately regain the starting role due to the emergence of Taylor Heinicke. The Commanders turned back to Wentz in Week 17 when they needed two wins to secure a playoff spot, but it ended in disappointment as he threw three interceptions and managed just 143 passing yards in a loss to Cleveland, effectively ending Washington’s season.
The Commanders released Wentz in February, making him a free agent. Reports suggest that Wentz had offseason work with Jon Gruden, who is a former mentor of Rams head coach Sean McVay.
In recent seasons, Wentz has faced struggles as a quarterback, often succumbing to pressure and making costly mistakes typically associated with younger players. His availability as a free agent into November underscores the league’s perception of him as a former starter.
However, there is optimism that McVay, who successfully worked with Baker Mayfield on short notice last season, could help Wentz experience a resurgence in Los Angeles, especially if Stafford’s injury lingers.
