Joao Pedro recently shared that he experienced prolonged disappointment following the breakdown of his intended transfer to Newcastle United last summer. Despite initial reports from Fabrizio Romano in August 2022 suggesting a completed deal for £25m plus £5m in add-ons, negotiations faltered, and an agreement with Watford couldn’t be reached.

Fast forward 18 months, the Brazilian forward finds himself at Brighton, thriving under Roberto De Zerbi. He has made a significant impact, scoring six goals in his first 17 games for the club, having secured a club-record £30m move to the Amex in May.

“I had that discussion with Newcastle. Even months ago, I was disappointed that I hadn’t left, but I told myself that this is my time at Watford, and if it didn’t happen before, it will this time.

“I made it happen last season, and I believe Brighton was the best next step.” They are a club that provides opportunity to young people. It has faith in us. I made the correct decision. “I’m very content here.”

Reflecting on what might have been, Joao Pedro revealed to Globo Esporte that he was engaged in talks with Newcastle. Even months later, he remains disheartened that the deal did not materialize. While he could have been a noteworthy addition to Eddie Howe’s squad, Newcastle eventually secured Alexander Isak just four days after Romano’s premature announcement, providing an alternative solution.
