Nightmare for Bruno Guimaraes as 26th birthday ends in disaster

Bruno Guimaraes turned 26 yesterday, but his birthday in Colombia ended in misery for the Newcastle United player.

On Thursday night, the midfielder started Brazil’s World Cup qualifier, alongside Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, Liverpool’s Alisson, Barcelona’s Raphinha, and PSG’s Marquinhos.

They got off to a flying start, with Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli scoring early on, but two late goals in four minutes from Liverpool’s Luis Diaz sealed a miraculous win for Colombia, dropping Brazil to fifth in South America’s World Cup qualifying group.

Brazil has now failed to win a World Cup qualifier for the third time in a row, following a 2-0 loss to Uruguay and a 1-1 draw with Venezuela during the international break in October.

So, it was a tough night for Bruno, who didn’t stamp his authority on the game with Fluminense’s Andre, but it was a relief for Newcastle that he seemed to come through the game unhurt, with Joelinton an unused substitute.

Our Brazilian teammates will face table-topping Argentina in the early hours of next Wednesday morning!
