Newcastle United is exploring the option of delving into the loan market come January, with plans underway for a potential deal with Champions League adversaries Paris Saint-Germain.
A rematch against PSG looms in less than two weeks, harkening back to the memorable night at St James’ Park in October. Regardless of the outcome in Paris next week, another encounter between the two clubs could take place in January, albeit this time in the boardroom.
The reason for this renewed interaction is Newcastle’s revived interest in Hugo Ekitike, whom PSG secured ahead of the Magpies in 2022. The 21-year-old, who had declined offers from Eddie Howe’s side twice in the past, finds himself in need of a move away from PSG, attracting attention from Premier League clubs, including West Ham United and Newcastle.
Despite Ekitike’s previous refusals, Newcastle is keen on securing him. According to the Northern Echo, the Magpies have identified Ekitike as a target for the January transfer window, aiming to secure him on loan from PSG for the remainder of the season, with an option to buy in the summer. This approach aligns with Newcastle’s cautious handling of financial fair play.
The strategy involves a “try before you buy” approach for Newcastle. Opting for a loan with an option to buy would allow the club to assess Ekitike’s performance during the loan period. If he fails to prove his worth, there is no obligation to make the deal permanent. However, if Ekitike impresses, a prearranged deal would facilitate his permanent transfer from PSG.
While Ekitike will need to demonstrate his capabilities to win over Newcastle fans, the club’s officials evidently see something special in him, evident in their renewed pursuit after the events of the previous year. The January transfer window is expected to reveal how determinedly Newcastle will pursue Ekitike, showcasing the club’s belief in his potential.
