Sam Byram expressed remorse over his decision to depart Leeds United in January 2016, stating that he harbors “regrets” about the move. He acknowledged that had he been aware of Leeds’ promotion under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020, he would have opted to stay with the club. Byram returned to Leeds United in the summer, marking his comeback seven and a half years after leaving in 2016 to join West Ham, a stint marked by injuries and limited appearances. Despite initially rejoining for training and reconnecting with Daniel Farke, Byram eventually secured a one-year contract with Leeds after participating in pre-season games.
He has since become a key player, particularly in the left-back position. Reflecting on his departure in an interview with The Athletic, Byram admitted that, in hindsight, he would have declined the move, recognizing the missed opportunity to contribute to Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League. Byram noted the challenges during his initial departure, citing the club’s struggles in the Championship and a perceived lack of stability. He revealed that Massimo Cellino, the club’s owner at the time, offered him a new contract but under unfavorable terms. Despite uncertainties about his role under Bielsa, Byram is delighted to be back at Leeds United.
