Grady Diangana faced another setback for DR Congo, being substituted at half-time in their 1-0 loss to Sudan on Sunday. West Brom’s manager, Carlos Corberan, is set to seek explanations for Diangana’s struggles during international duty.
Since his permanent move from West Ham in 2020, Diangana’s performances have been inconsistent, with 17 goals and 14 assists in 135 appearances at The Hawthorns. Despite recent improvements, where he contributed two goals and three assists in his last six starts for West Brom, his earlier performances were less impressive.
Before his recent resurgence, the 25-year-old faced a challenging start to the season, playing six games with just one assist and minimal key contributions. Corberan, the Spanish coach, likely found these statistics unimpressive.
Diangana’s recent success with West Brom can be attributed to his new role as one of the two frontmen in a 3-5-2 formation. This revitalized form, however, did not translate to success in international fixtures against Mauritania and Sudan, where he was absent in the victory against Mauritania and subbed off at half-time in the defeat to Sudan.
The reasons behind his early substitution remain unclear, whether due to his performance or a potential injury. Diangana’s initial period as a DR Congo footballer has been challenging, and Corberan is expected to seek clarification on his international displays.
