The Magic Weekend set for surprise new stadium as move away explained

The Magic Weekend is on the brink of a significant change, signaling the conclusion of an era as it bids farewell to Newcastle United’s St James’ Park in 2024. Reliable reports, including information from Serious About Rugby League, confirm this shift, with the upcoming venue slated to be Elland Road, the home of Leeds United.

Elland Road boasts a rich rugby league history, highlighted by its recent hosting of the thrilling 2022 World Cup semi-final between Australia and New Zealand, widely regarded as the tournament’s standout match. Additionally, it accommodated the Challenge Cup semi-final doubleheader featuring Wigan Warriors, St Helens, Huddersfield Giants, and Hull KR, including the women’s Challenge Cup Final between St Helens and Leeds Rhinos.

Notably, Elland Road has been a venue for significant rugby league events in the past, such as the Four Nations final in 2011 and several World Club Challenges involving Leeds in 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2010. In 2018, Leeds faced Hull KR and Castleford Tigers at Elland Road during stadium renovations.

Serious About Rugby League anticipates an official announcement, shedding light on the reasons behind Newcastle losing its hosting privileges. The crucial August date appears to be a factor, as the event can no longer coincide with the football off-season. Moreover, changes in the ownership of the football club played a pivotal role.

Despite concerns about the Magic Weekend’s future, clubs express enthusiasm for the move, and the Rugby Football League (RFL) is working to make the 2024 event special. There is uncertainty about the overall concept’s fate, as IMG initially planned to discontinue the Magic Weekend, redirecting focus to the Grand Final and Challenge Cup Final.

The success of the 2024 event will likely determine the Magic Weekend’s continuation. If successful, the concept may endure, but if not, this could mark the end of the Magic Weekend, prompting IMG to revise the calendar. Additionally, the Challenge Cup is undergoing significant restructuring under IMG’s influence, with the cup final moving to June, necessitating the rescheduling of the Magic Weekend.
