Kane Wilson emerged from the West Brom academy and made his debut for the first team at the tender age of 16. Reflecting on his time at West Bromwich Albion, Wilson discussed the impact of former manager Tony Pulis’s dismissal on his development. Wilson entered the first-team scene during the 2016 pre-season under Pulis when he was just 16 years old, simultaneously managing his GCSEs.
Impressing in various friendlies, Wilson earned his first-team debut as a dynamic full-back in the early stages of the EFL Cup campaign against Northampton Town. This opportunity arose as Albion was transitioning between right-backs, having moved on from players like Cristian Gamboa and relied on Craig Dawson to fill the role.
Despite showcasing his talents, Wilson was eventually displaced by the recruited Allan Nyom and was subsequently sent on loan as a young player. Upon his return the following season, a new manager, Alan Pardew, was at the helm. Playing for Derby County now, with stints at Forest Green Rovers and Bristol City, Wilson realized he needed to seek more playing time elsewhere.
Recalling his early development, Wilson mentioned that West Brom initially considered him for a center-back role due to his size and ball-handling skills. However, recognizing his proficiency in running with the ball, they shifted him to midfield until the age of 12 or 13. The academy then expressed a desire to fast-track him into the first team at the age of 16, a decision communicated to his parents during a meeting at the academy head office.
