Barnsley experienced a disappointing outcome in their EFL Trophy match at Valley Parade on Tuesday, losing 5-1. However, amidst the gloom, Luca Connell’s return after battling a debilitating illness offered a silver lining. In their defeat, where a complete write-off seemed imminent, Connell played for just over an hour, marking a crucial step in his recovery.

This appearance followed the midfielder’s start in the Reds’ FA Cup replay at Horsham a week earlier. Notably, Connell is not the ineligible player responsible for the club’s removal from the competition on November 14, as announced by the Football Association.

It’s easy to forget the significant role Connell played in Barnsley’s success last season, reaching the play-off final and narrowly missing promotion. Unfortunately, his promising trajectory took a downturn when he fell ill with post-viral fatigue during the summer.

Having spent a considerable period on the couch and undergoing rounds of testing, Connell gradually improved, allowing him to begin his rehabilitation. While he has yet to feature in a league game this season, his recent three consecutive cup appearances, including two starts, signify a positive start.

Reflecting on his illness, Connell described the sudden onset of symptoms, including headaches, fatigue, and sickness. Despite consultations with specialists in Manchester and London, the exact cause remained elusive, eventually diagnosed as post-viral fatigue.

Connell spent around 11 to 12 weeks on the couch before gradually reintegrating into physical activities. Grateful for the support of the physios and medical team, he emphasized the importance of rest and self-care during his recovery.

Apart from physical challenges, Connell faced the psychological toll of being away from the first team, especially earlier in the season. Watching games from home in Liverpool, he missed the camaraderie of the training ground and match-day environment.

As he works towards making his maiden league appearance in the current season, Connell is cautious not to rush his return. Guided by the club’s medical team, he prioritizes building up minutes while maintaining a focus on his health.

Despite the challenges, Connell found encouragement in wearing the captain’s armband in matches against Bradford City and Horsham. Acknowledging the leadership of Jordan Williams, he expressed gratitude for the support received from the club as he looks forward to contributing more on the field.
