Newcastle United player facing three months out after injury U-turn as uncertainty remains over £55m duo

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has provided the latest updates on the injuries of key players such as Callum Wilson, Harvey Barnes, and Sven Botman. Currently, there is considerable uncertainty surrounding the injured players, as noted by Howe.

The team is optimistic about the return of Alexander Isak this weekend, recovering from a month-long groin injury. Sean Longstaff’s availability for the Chelsea match will be determined through a late fitness test. However, players like Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes have more extended recovery timelines, while uncertainties persist regarding Sven Botman.

Several players, including Jacob Murphy, Dan Burn, and Matt Targett, are ruled out until early 2024. Additionally, Elliot Anderson’s back injury might extend into the new year before his return.

Despite these setbacks, Howe is hopeful for the return of key players Barnes, Botman, and Wilson before the mentioned timelines. However, he remains guarded about Wilson’s exact recovery duration, stating it is “slightly unclear” after the striker’s hamstring problem ruled him out for ‘a number of weeks.’

Botman, recovering from a mysterious knee injury for two months, lacks a confirmed return date. Howe expressed knowledge of the injury but uncertainty about its duration, emphasizing the team’s hope for a swift return.

Regarding Barnes, there appears to be a change in prognosis. While initially indicating good progress before the international break, Howe now aligns with the original prognosis of a three-month absence. Despite the earlier optimism, Barnes is expected to be out for a more extended period, according to Howe’s latest update.
