Mercedes changing “every component” for W15 F1 2024 car

Mercedes plans an extensive transformation for its Formula 1 car in the upcoming season, aiming to return to the top spot after a challenging 2023 campaign. Despite securing the second position in the constructors’ championship, the team struggled against the dominant Red Bull. Recognizing an early error in the car’s aero platform, Mercedes made significant adjustments post-Monaco GP but fell short of regaining the lead.

Acknowledging the need for a new design approach in 2024, team principal Toto Wolff disclosed the comprehensive nature of the overhaul in progress at Brackley. The changes involve a shift in chassis layout, weight distribution, and airflow, with virtually every component undergoing modification. Wolff expressed cautious optimism about the potential success of these alterations, recognizing the possibility of setbacks.

Wolff emphasized a pragmatic mindset, stating he has never felt overly optimistic, relying on managing expectations and continuous effort. Despite securing second place in the constructors’ championship at the Abu Dhabi GP, he conveyed a bittersweet sentiment, acknowledging the achievement while lamenting the loss of the top spot.

When asked about the prospect of the redesigned car putting Mercedes back at the forefront, Wolff maintained a balanced perspective, emphasizing the need to be humble and recognizing the significant challenge posed by Red Bull. He anticipated strong competition from McLaren, Aston Martin, and others in the upcoming season, emphasizing the team’s commitment to leaving no stone unturned in pursuit of success. Despite the disappointment of finishing in second place, Wolff sees it as an opportunity to regroup and aim for excellence in the future.
