In the 2023 Formula 1 season, George Russell faced significant challenges, scoring 59 points less than his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. Russell acknowledged 2023 as one of the most difficult seasons in his motorsport career, attributing his struggles to the inconsistent performance of the W14.
While both Russell and Hamilton grappled with the unpredictability of the Mercedes challenger, Hamilton consistently outperformed Russell throughout the season. Despite matching in qualifying sessions at 11-11, Russell lagged behind in races, losing 15-6 to Hamilton. This margin would have been 16-6 if not for Hamilton’s disqualification at the United States Grand Prix. The overall result was Russell finishing 59 points and five places behind the seven-time World Champion.
Russell identified race pace as a weakness in 2023, despite concluding the season with a podium at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He described the year as strange, acknowledging good pace but expressing frustration over the lack of corresponding results.
Driver errors, including a notable incident at the Singapore Grand Prix where he crashed on the final lap while in third place, further contributed to Russell’s challenges in 2023. When questioned about the reasons for inconsistent results, Russell did not provide specific answers but indicated a need for investigation during the winter break.
Reflecting on the season, Russell emphasized the need to address issues that went beyond mere bad luck, expressing the intention to delve into these matters during the winter break.

Looking ahead, both Russell and Hamilton hope that Mercedes can learn from their struggles in 2023 to enhance their new concept for 2024. Their goal is to compete effectively against Red Bull and, in particular, Max Verstappen in the upcoming season.
