West Ham’s season has been inconsistent under David Moyes, possibly contributing to the board’s hesitance in extending his contract expiring in June next year. Despite the opportunity to build on their Europa Conference League title, the team seems to have regressed.
A notable development is the positional change of Jarrod Bowen to a striker, a decision made by the manager. However, his teammate Michail Antonio, speaking on the Footballers’ Football Podcast, suggests that the English international prefers playing as a wide player. Antonio’s own struggles in front of goal, with just two goals in 2023/24 according to WhoScored, may have prompted the conversion of Bowen to a makeshift center-forward.
“Honestly, I think he’s got the ability to do it (play as a striker),” Antonio was quoted as saying.
“I believe he has the qualities of a striker.” He’s powerful, good on the ball, and can come in deep and retrieve it. Another thing you mentioned is that he scores goals.
“I believe he’ll end up there because of his ability and knowledge to always be in the right position and know where to be in the box.” And he has an incredible finale to him. So I believe he has the potential to become a striker.
“I don’t think he’s having fun right now.” He doesn’t get nearly as much ball as he did out wide. And when you play center forward, you always have two center halves on your back. Whereas on the vast, you might wander into areas and go unnoticed.”
If Moyes defies expectations and remains in his current role, there arises a question about whether Bowen will continue in the adapted role for the team’s benefit or if he will request a return to his usual position on the flank.
