The Magpies might be looking to acquire another forward in the upcoming January transfer window. Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has suggested that his former club should consider re-signing Brentford forward Ivan Toney. While the Magpies currently have Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson as effective scorers in their forward lineup, both players have faced injuries this season. Consequently, there is a growing consensus that Newcastle should explore the possibility of signing a third striker in the upcoming transfer window.
Shearer supports this idea and recommends pursuing a reunion with Toney, even though the forward is suspended until January 2024. Expressing his opinion on the matter, Shearer, speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, stated, “I would [try and sign him] if I was in charge of the recruitment at Newcastle. I think he is a really good player and a really good option, and Newcastle need to improve in that department. They need another body in there, and I don’t think there will be a shortage of takers for Ivan Toney.”
Toney has an impressive track record, boasting 32 goals in 66 Premier League appearances for Brentford. A potential return to Newcastle would mark a full circle for Toney, who left the Magpies to join Peterborough United in August 2018. Despite the interest from Newcastle, Toney has also been linked with a move to Arsenal. Shearer acknowledges that Toney could be a perfect fit for the Gunners, especially considering the attacking options Arsenal has on the flanks. Shearer commented on Arsenal’s potential interest in Toney, saying, “I think with who they have on either side down the flanks, I think he would have a field day with the amount of crosses into the box.”
