Three reasons why Danny Rohl must avoid this January swoop at Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday has been associated with several players in anticipation of the January transfer window. The upcoming month may prove to be busy for the club, especially with the recent appointment of Kevin Beadell as the new Head of Recruitment.
One player under consideration for a potential transfer to Hillsborough is James Beadle, the current loaned Brighton goalkeeper performing well at Oxford United. There’s a possibility of his recall next month and subsequent loan to a Championship club for the second half of the season.
Additionally, Scott Hogan from Birmingham City is being considered as a potential target for Sheffield Wednesday. The 31-year-old striker, who has fallen out of favor under Wayne Rooney this season, could be the new addition that the club is looking for.
Despite these possibilities, there are three reasons outlined why Danny Rohl and Wednesday should steer clear of a move for the former Aston Villa and Brentford striker.
Scott Hogan’s Birmingham City wages
Sheffield Wednesday would have to pay Hogan’s wages whether he arrived on loan or as a permanent player.
He’s one of the higher-earners at St Andrew’s, making a reported £20k-a-week wage at Birmingham City right now, so Hogan would only add to the Owls’ already bloated squad and wage cost.
Josh Windass can play a key role in 2024
Josh Windass has been absent from the last two games, likely due to an injury. However, it is anticipated that he will return soon, providing a significant boost to Rohl’s team. Windass demonstrated his offensive prowess in the recent victory against Blackburn Rovers, scoring his first goal of the season. His dynamic style and forward-thinking abilities make him a valuable asset, similar to what Hogan is known for.
In contrast, Hogan, a seasoned Championship striker, appears to be on the decline. While he has a proven track record, especially during his prolific days with Brentford and Birmingham City, he currently struggles to secure a regular spot in the Birmingham City lineup, a team positioned 17th in the Championship table. Rohl, aiming for higher aspirations, prefers younger players whom he can shape into his desired style. Consequently, pursuing Hogan does not align with Rohl’s inclination for younger talents.
