Breaking News: Milwaukee Brewers just confirms the signing of another superstar catcher

Detroit native, former Tigers catcher signs with Brewers

Detroit native and former Tigers catcher Eric Haase has secured a major league contract with a new team, the Milwaukee Brewers, as announced on Wednesday. The terms of the one-year deal were not disclosed. Haase, who celebrated his 31st birthday earlier this week, showcased impressive batting performances for the Tigers in 2021 and 2022, but experienced a significant decline in form in the following year.

After being placed on waivers by the Detroit Tigers in August, Haase was claimed by the Cleveland Guardians. However, he was subsequently waived again and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Columbus before opting for free agency at the end of the season. Despite facing challenges in 2023, including offensive struggles, Haase’s reputation as a skilled game-caller and exceptional athlete, not limited to his position as a catcher, has earned him a spot with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Previously, there were indications that Haase might have to settle for a minor-league deal this offseason. Instead, he will continue his career in the Midwest, serving as the backup to Brewers starter William Contreras. In November, the Tigers opted for a $3.5 million contract option for veteran catcher Carson Kelly, who replaced Haase in August.

Haase, a Westland native who attended Divine Child High School in Dearborn and currently resides in Livonia, was drafted by Cleveland in 2011. After a journey through the Indians’ minor-league system, he made his MLB debut in 2018. Despite playing sparingly with the Indians in 2018 and 2019, Haase became a key contributor for the Tigers in 2021, hitting 22 home runs in 381 plate appearances and contributing to the team’s success.

While 2023 marked one of Haase’s best defensive seasons, including catching another no-hitter in July, his offensive production declined significantly. With a batting average of .201, four home runs, and a .530 OPS in 282 plate appearances, Haase was designated for assignment. Despite these offensive struggles, the Tigers achieved a 29-23 record with Haase behind the plate, as pitchers posted a 3.75 ERA in 468 innings during his tenure.
