McLaren CEO Zak Brown anticipates that the full impact of their recent hires and investments in the wind tunnel will not be fully realized until 2025. Despite a slow start in 2023, McLaren experienced a notable improvement in on-track performance, securing P4 in the constructor’s championship with a mid-season upgrade. The team’s transformation extends beyond visible upgrades, including key personnel changes and restructuring. The Formula 1 Technical Executive Team, reporting directly to Team Principal Andrea Stella, was established, featuring figures like Peter Prodromou and David Sanchez in crucial roles. Another notable addition is Rob Marshall, formerly of Red Bull, as Technical Director for Engineering & Design. McLaren’s new wind tunnel, in-house simulator, and manufacturing unit have further enhanced their capabilities.
Brown expressed optimism about the team’s future during a press conference in Las Vegas, acknowledging the need for time to fully leverage the recent upgrades. He emphasized the significance of the upcoming January hires and the excitement surrounding the team’s new facilities. However, Brown noted that the 2024 car development is already underway, and the team expects to see the complete impact of their changes by 2025. Despite the ongoing positive developments, there are high expectations for McLaren to build on their 2023 success and potentially present a consistent challenge to Red Bull in 2024.
Brown also praised Team Principal Andrea Stella for his outstanding leadership, communication skills, and empowerment of the team throughout the transformative process, highlighting Stella’s positive influence during his first year in the role.
