During the upcoming offseason, there’s a possibility of a reunion, as per Jon Heyman of The New York Post, who reports that the New York Yankees are interested in bringing back starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery. Montgomery, who spent 5 1/2 seasons with the Yankees from 2017 to 2022, registering a 3.94 ERA in 97 starts, was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals by General Manager Brian Cashman at the 2022 trade deadline in exchange for center fielder Harrison Bader. Since the trade, Montgomery has excelled, contributing to the Texas Rangers’ World Series victory last season, making him a sought-after free agent looking for a substantial contract.
Reports suggest that Montgomery is seeking a deal comparable to the six-year, $162 million contract that Carlos Rodon received from the Yankees the previous year. Despite their pursuit of Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who ultimately signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a more lucrative deal, the Yankees view reuniting with Montgomery as a solid Plan B. This move aims to pair the 31-year-old left-hander with Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole once again.
According to Heyman, the extent of the Yankees’ interest in free agent and NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell is unclear at this point. However, it seems that Montgomery has become their primary choice following Yamamoto’s signing with the Dodgers.
