The Dallas Cowboys might be seeking a new running back in the upcoming offseason, and there’s speculation about Wisconsin’s standout, Braelon Allen, being a potential option for them in the 2024 NFL draft.

The current primary running back, Tony Pollard, is set to become a free agent at the season’s end after playing under the $10 million franchise tag. According to a recent seven-round mock draft by USA Today’s Tim Lettiero, Dallas could secure Allen in the third round. Lettiero makes a compelling case for the Cowboys to consider this powerful and productive running back often referred to as a “tank.”

Lettiero, in his December 15, 2023 article titled “Cowboys 7-round mock draft: Replenishing OL, RB among top 2024 priorities,” emphasizes Allen’s potential in a competitive running back class. Despite being notably young, turning 20 in January, Allen possesses a robust physique standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 245 pounds, showcasing impressive speed. Drawing parallels to Derrick Henry, Lettiero suggests that Allen is the closest resemblance to Henry seen in recent times.

While Allen excels in power running, Lettiero acknowledges the absence of agility and pass-catching skills. However, he points out that Allen compensates with exceptional pass protection. Considering the strengths and weaknesses, Lettiero emphasizes the value of having a running back like Allen, who, despite lacking in certain areas, can contribute significantly to the team’s offensive strategy, especially in pass protection—a quality that can benefit quarterback Dak Prescott’s long-term prospects.

Potential Dallas Cowboys’ Target Braelon Allen Posted 35 Touchdowns in 3 Years at Wisconsin

Selecting Allen or another running back in the draft doesn’t automatically indicate the team’s intention to part ways with Pollard. Nonetheless, considering Pollard’s recent performance, the Cowboys should carefully weigh their decision before committing to a new long-term contract for the star player. Pollard has failed to surpass 60 rushing yards in the last four games for Dallas.

Allen boasts an impressive track record, having scored 35 career touchdowns during his three-year tenure at Wisconsin. Throughout his Badgers career, he consistently reached double-digit touchdowns each season, totaling 181 carries for 984 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. His average of 5.4 yards per rush in 11 appearances is noteworthy.

Standing at a substantial 6-foot-2 and 238 pounds, Allen possesses ideal NFL size. However, uncertainties persist regarding his transition to the NFL, particularly regarding his effectiveness in the passing game. In 2023, Allen recorded 28 receptions for 132 yards. It’s worth noting that he faced challenges with fumbling, which raises concerns as he enters the professional league.

Braelon Allen Is Being Praised for His ‘Size, Vision & Acceleration’ Heading Into the 2024 NFL Draft

Nonetheless, Wisconsin has gained a reputation for producing top-tier NFL running backs such as Jonathan Taylor and Melvin Gordon. In November, Dane Brugler from The Athletic anticipated Allen to be selected in the third round.

“Several scouts initially graded Allen as a second-round talent at the beginning of the season,” Brugler shared in a November 3 mailbag article with Jesse Temple from The Athletic. “I appreciate his size, vision, and acceleration, especially considering he is only 19 years old. However, he has had issues with fumbling this season, which wasn’t evident in last year’s footage. It’s crucial for him to maintain good health and stay on the field.

“At the moment, I predict that both Allen and Wisconsin left tackle Jack Nelson will be chosen in the third round if they decide to enter the draft, although this assessment might evolve in the final month of the season and throughout the evaluation process. Both players are envisioned to become NFL starters.”
