Switzerland international Schär, who celebrated his 32nd birthday last month, has accumulated 169 appearances for the club since joining from Deportivo La Coruña in July 2018.
The stylish central defender has notched up 11 goals in the black and white jersey, showcasing his scoring prowess, with several of those goals being particularly remarkable – including the unforgettable final goal in the Magpies’ 4-1 Champions League triumph over Paris Saint-Germain in October.
Expressing his deep connection with the team, Schär, who has represented his country 78 times and is anticipated to be part of the squad for the Euro 2024 competition next summer, stated, “I’ve mentioned it numerous times, but I genuinely feel at home here. Living in Newcastle is incredibly comfortable; I have a great affection for the city, enjoy playing for the club, and am immensely grateful for the incredible fans. I can’t emphasize enough how much I appreciate them and the significance of their support.”
Describing the club as a family, Schär highlighted his comfort with teammates and the coaching staff, expressing gratitude for the extension of his stay and the anticipation of more memorable moments.
Having received the North East Football Writers’ Player of the Year award in 2019 under Rafa Benítez, Schär’s importance to Newcastle has only grown since Eddie Howe took over as Head Coach in November 2021. Instrumental in helping the Magpies secure European qualification and reach the Carabao Cup final last season, Schär’s consistent performances have been acknowledged by Howe: “Fabian has been exceptional for us. Since I arrived at the football club, he has been a paragon of consistency and a significant contributor to our success. His defensive skills are exemplary, and his ball-playing abilities add tremendous value. We are thrilled that he has extended his contract here.”
