The transfer portal has claimed a key linebacker from the Auburn Tigers. One of their most seasoned linebackers is departing as the team looks to rebuild in that position during the offseason. Despite actively seeking new talent from the transfer portal to enhance their linebacker depth, the Tigers find themselves losing a player with considerable experience.

Cam Riley, who dedicated four seasons to the Tigers from 2020 to 2023, has officially entered the transfer portal, according to reports from 247Sports. Standing at an impressive 6-foot-5 and weighing 235 pounds, Riley holds the distinction of being Auburn’s largest linebacker in program history. As of the recent fall camp, he was poised to secure a starting position for the Tigers.

Aldridge, the Auburn linebackers coach, spoke about Riley’s competitiveness for the starting spot, mentioning that he was frequently sharing first-team reps. Riley’s versatility was noted, as he was considered a top choice for roles like jack linebacker or sam linebacker. Despite the uncertainty of his starting status, Riley was expected to log significant playing time due to his ability to contribute in multiple positions.

Throughout his tenure with the Tigers, Riley accumulated an impressive stat line, including 120 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, and two sacks. His standout season was in 2022, where he recorded 65 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. With one season of eligibility remaining, Riley has opted to explore opportunities elsewhere.

In an effort to fill the void left by Riley, Auburn secured the transfer of Dorian Maui from Duke earlier in the offseason. Maui is expected to step in and contribute, potentially compensating for the departure of Riley and maintaining the Tigers’ linebacker productivity.
