The Texas Longhorns sought to enhance their linebacker group through the NCAA transfer portal, and they successfully achieved this goal with the commitment of Kendrick Blackshire, a transfer from the Alabama Crimson Tide. Blackshire, expressing his reasons for choosing Texas, highlighted the coaching staff, particularly Coach Sark, and the significance of returning home to the great state of Texas. He emphasized the importance of being surrounded by individuals who are dedicated to his success.
Blackshire, who has one remaining year of eligibility, finalized his decision after official visits to Ole Miss and Texas over the weekend. As a recruit, he was ranked as the No. 168 player overall and the No. 21 linebacker in the country. Initially committing to the Alabama Crimson Tide during the COVID recruiting season, where he was recruited by current Texas assistant Jeff Banks, Blackshire received offers from the Longhorns and nearly 30 other programs.

Standing at 6’2 and weighing 233 pounds, Blackshire played in eight games for the Crimson Tide in 2023, contributing with 16 tackles and a forced fumble. He also played a significant role on special teams. Known for his well-developed linebacker physique and aggressive tackling style, Blackshire excels in the run game, an area where Texas is expected to benefit from additional support. However, there is acknowledgment that his skills in the passing game require further development, presenting a task for the new linebackers coach, Johnny Nansen.
The Longhorns received positive news in the linebacker department as David Gbenda announced his decision to return for another season, adding strength to the position room. With Blackshire and Gbenda, along with Anthony Hill, the reigning Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year, the linebacker group becomes a key focal point in Pete Kwiatkowski’s defensive scheme.
